Give ’em What They Want

Keep It Simple

I truly believe that people want what they want when they want it.

It seems like nowadays no matter where we are, in store or online, from Cold Stone Creamery to requesting home services, someone must find the need to offer or suggest a variety of items or services. Hey, this is by no means a bad thing; quite the opposite. However, I’ve come to realize that decision-making is much easier when you have just enough options.

Consider Cold Stone Creamery.  Great brand. But try going in there and ask for vanilla ice cream. Go ahead. I’ll wait…and wait. You not only have to decide from a variety of cones and cups, but also between hard yogurt or ice cream, fresh fruits or nuts, hot fudge or syrup. Oh, you want a cone? Okay…plain or chocolate? Rainbow sprinkles or chocolate sprinkles? Well, you get the gist. I cannot imagine anything more complicated or forethoughtful than something so simple as vanilla ice cream.

This is also typical of online merchants who will delay your checkout with numerous items that may or may not complement your original purchase. Or the cluttered website with so many links and buttons. Once again, there is nothing wrong with variety or suggestive selling.

In conclusion, I believe consumers simply want nothing more than the item or service they request. While having options is always a good thing, it also makes decision-making that much more difficult. I believe people prefer clarity and things that are cluttered free. I personally prefer things that are pristine in nature and to the point.

I’d like to know what you think. Kindly share your thoughts.

Thank you.
